Christ Kefalàs

Remains of the renowned church of Christ Kefalàs, which served as the seat of the seafarers’ confraternity, have been identified incorporated into a late 19th-century building at the junction of Perdikaris, Korais, and Milatou Streets. Although first mentioned in 1307, the church most probably dates back to the Byzantine period. During its renovation in the early 17th century, it was adorned with a marble Renaissance doorframe by the celebrated sculptor Thomas Benetos, who also worked on the Ducal Palace and the Morosini Fountain. After the fall of Candia, the church’s treasures were transferred to the Ionian Islands.
