Virgin of the Angels
The church of the Virgin of the Angels -perhaps the most important Orthodox church and the seat of the Protopapas (head priest) of Candia- stood outside and to the south-west of the Voltone gate. It was erected before 1320 and repaired prior to 1410. In 1421, its western wall was adorned with a fresco of the Last Judgement by the renowned icon painter Angelos Apokaukos. Following the Ottoman conquest, the building was subdivided into shops, the rents from which supported the mosque of Zulfikar Agha (Saint Catherine). Today, portions of the barrel-vaulted northern aisle survive, along with a pointed-arched doorway preserved within the interior of later shops.
