St John the Baptist of the Franciscans

The Church of St John the Baptist, belonging to the Franciscan Order, was erected in the 13th century outside the old walls, along the Via dello Spedale (present-day 1821 Street). The shell of the monument has survived to the present day, albeit altered through its conversion into a mosque and its long use as a commercial premises.

It consists of two aisles, separated by four arched openings. The northern aisle is slightly wider and is covered by a saddleback timber roof. At its eastern end, a narrower square compartment, roofed with a barrel vault, probably housed the sanctuary. In the eastern part of the southern aisle, two square domed chambers were formed, most likely during the Ottoman period. The remaining western section of the southern aisle is likewise covered by a saddleback timber roof, which appears to preserve its original form.
