Saint Matthew

The single-aisled, barrel-vaulted church of Saint Matthew is dated by inscription to 1600 and is the earliest of a complex of three churches constructed in succession. After the Ottoman conquest, it was purchased by Panagiotakis Nikousios, Grand Dragoman of the Sublime Porte, and granted to the Monastery of Sinai. For decades, it was the only Orthodox church in Candia to remain in use. Today, it houses a collection of icons of the Cretan School, including two unsigned works attributed to Michael Damaskinos.
