St Titus (Latin Archbishopric)
None of the three successive buildings that housed the seat of the Latin Archbishopric — all dedicated to the Apostle Titus, founder of the Cretan Church — has survived. The earliest structure was probably erected during the second Byzantine period and was retained by the Venetians with only minor alterations. Rebuilt in 1446 and again in 1550, it had the form of a three-aisled basilica with numerous chapels. Converted into a mosque after the conquest, it was ultimately demolished following the earthquake of 1856, giving way to the present-day building.
