Duke of Beaufort & Epimenidou Streets – Fytakis Mansion

The Fytakis Mansion is the city’s first multi-storey residential building with apartment dwellings, constructed between 1926 and 1930 and distinguished by notable Neoclassical elements on its façades. It is a representative example of interwar apartment architecture and a key reference point in the urban development of Heraklion. The building comprises a ground floor and four upper storeys, with a reinforced concrete structural frame.

Neoclassical stylistic features—architectural projections, cornices, piers, and the wrought-iron railings of entrances and balconies—together with the symmetrical arrangement of openings across the façades, combine to create a unique architectural landmark. Particularly distinctive are the wooden entrance doors to the ground-floor spaces, decorated with pseudo-pilasters featuring fluting and hand-carved detailing.
