The Land Gates

Access between the city and the surrounding countryside was provided through three main gates, which were opened beneath the low platforms of the bastion necks and took the form of vaulted passages. The inner gates (facing the city) were distinguished by imposing Renaissance façades, while the outer gates were simple portals. The gate with the most impressive façade is the Gate of Jesus (Porta di Gesù), which led south and was constructed during the tenure of the Provveditore Generale Zuanne Mocenigo in 1587.
To the west lay the Gate of the Pantokrator (Panigra) Bastion, built during the dogate of Pietro Loredan (1567–1570).
To the eastern ditch led the Gate of Saint George, erected in 1565 under the military governor of Crete, Paolo Zorzi and demolished in 1917.
