The Grain Store – Fondaco
Βetween 1562 and 1590, the infilled sections between the transverse partitions of the curtain wall west of the Gate Voltone were converted into vaulted arcades, subsequently incorporated into two buildings. The first, comprising thirty-two arcades at ground level and rising through three storeys, accommodated the Fondaco, the city’s public granary. From this function, the square in front of the complex—today Eleftheriou Venizelou Square—acquired the designation Piazza delle Biade (Grain Square). This section of the Fondaco was demolished in 1960, while part of it, featuring vaulted spaces, is preserved on the southern side of Chandakos Street.
