The harbour of Candia served as the lifeline of Crete, facilitating the movement of people and goods throughout the Eastern Mediterranean.  From the 13th to the 16th centuries, the Venetians upgraded the port facilities to serve trade and ship repair and strengthen its protection with a sea fortress at the harbour entrance.
