Private Buildings

Along the Ruga Magistra, the luxurious residences of nobles and officials once extended. Those that survived into the 19th century were destroyed in the fire that followed the events of 25 August 1898. The appearance of the ruins is preserved in photographs by Giuseppe Gerola. When he visited the city (1900–1902), only a few remnants of Venetian private houses remained. The best-preserved was the so-called “Ittar mansion”, named after the physician Amabile Ittar, who lived there at the end of the 19th century. The building survives with many later modifications, and its remarkable doorframe has been transferred to the Basilica of St Mark. After 1948, the Barozzi and Werdmüller mansions, as well as the residence of the Latin bishop, were also destroyed.
